SBI issues advisory as bank services hit by 3-day outage

Bank customers across the country have been advised to plan their banking work at branches accordingly as banking services may be affected for three consecutive days from September 11 to September 13, 2026.

The disruption was in connection with the country-wide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on September 11, the second Saturday on September 12 and Sunday on September 13. SBI has asked its customers to conduct important banking transactions before the strike.

Why Three Straight Days of Bank Beatings?

The three-day disruption was for different reasons:

  • Nationwide one-day strike by bank unions on September 11, 2026. But it was not a nationwide RBI bank holiday and the impact may vary depending on the bank and location.
  • September 12, 2026: All over India, banks observe the second Saturday of the month as a holiday.
  • Sunday, September 13, 2026. The regular weekly bank holiday.

“Customers who require services offered at branches may be delayed for three days because of this.

What did SBI tell its customers?

SBI had advised its customers to complete important transactions before the strike to avoid inconvenience. The bank also advised the use of digital banking channels and alternative facilities where possible.

Customers were told to use SBI YONO, internet banking, mobile banking and UPI for their routine transactions. For cash needs, SBI suggested ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs). SBI Customer Service Points (CSPs) were also used to provide certain banking services to customers.

What banking services could be impacted?

Branch-dependent services may be affected during the strike and weekend holidays. These included such activities as:

  • Bank branch cash deposits and withdrawals
  • Cheque related services
  • Order and Pay Draft Services
  • Update Passbook
  • Some paperwork and some bookkeeping
  • Other manual branch operations.

Customers who need urgent branch work are therefore asked to do so in advance.

There will be digital banking services.

When banks close branches, they do not stop banking services. Digital channels like UPI, internet banking, mobile banking and fund transfer services will work even during bank holidays.

In particular, SBI appealed to its customers to use its digital platforms including YONO, internet banking, ATMs and other self-service channels.

Important Notice for Bank Customers

The three-day outage does not necessarily mean that every bank branch in India was closed for the entire three-day period, and for the same reason. September 11 was the date of the planned nation-wide strike, while September 12 and 13 were ordinary bank holidays.

However, customers should always double-check the holiday status of their specific branch and bank in advance, especially for time-sensitive transactions.

Summary

The SBI had said in its advisory that the need was to plan branch-related banking work ahead of the September 11 strike and weekend holidays. During the period, customers
