NSE India to Host Webinar Series on Closing Auction Session and Revised Market Timings

NSE India rolls out a series of webinars

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE India) is gearing up to hold a webinar series to aid retail investors, traders and other market participants to comprehend the newly adopted Closing Auction Session (CAS). The program will emphasize the significance of auction-based closing process, altered market timings and its role in promoting transparency and efficiency in the Indian stock market.

The webinar series is aimed to give attendees with practical insights into the determination of closing prices under the new system. It will also describe how the Closing Auction Session influences order entry, price discovery, derivatives settlement, and the ultimate reference price used by various market players.

The statement by NSE follows the implementation of CAS in the equities cash segment within the regulatory framework established by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). In January 2026, SEBI released a framework to adopt an auction-based process for determining the official closing price of qualifying securities.

What is the Closing Auction?

The Closing Auction Session is a distinct trading session of 20 minutes conducted between 3.15 pm and 3.35 pm on trading days. Currently, it is applicable for equities in the cash segment for which derivative contracts are available, NSE India said.

The new system uses an equilibrium price discovery method for determining the official closing price, instead of only the trades conducted in the last minutes of continuous trading. The equilibrium price is the price at which the greatest volume of purchase and sell orders may be completed.

If more than one price achieves the same maximum executable volume, the order imbalance is considered by the system. In the event of equal imbalance, the price that is closer to the reference price is selected. The point of this method is to make sure that the closing price is representative of broader buying and selling interest, not just a few trades.

NSE trading hours amended

The CAS kicks off with a calculating time for transition and reference prices from 15:15 to 15:20. Reference price is the volume weighted average price of deals executed between 3:00 pm and 3:15 pm.

Order entry period is from 3:20 pm to 3:30 pm. In the first five minutes you can enter, change or cancel both market and limit orders. 3:25 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Only limit orders are accepted. The order input window closes at a random time between 3:28 pm and 3:30 pm to make it harder for anyone to manipulate the system in the last minute.

Between 3.30 pm and 3.35 pm order matching and trade confirmation happens. NSE has additionally fixed price band of +/- 3% from reference price for shares participating in CAS

Why the webinar is important for investors

The NSE webinar series will be especially useful to retail investors who might be new to auction-based price discovery. Participants will understand how existing orders carry forward, what order types are allowed, and how the ultimate closing price may affect portfolio value and trading methods.

There are various reasons why the closing price is essential. It can be used for index computing, derivative settlement, mutual fund valuation and performance measurement. A more transparent closure method could potentially increase execution efficiency for large orders and lessen the likelihood of severe price distortions at the end of the trading session.

NSE India has provided the operating details of CAS in a bid to help investors and market intermediaries to move smoothly. As such, the webinar series is likely to be a major teaching effort as participants transition to the modified closure procedure.

Investors and traders are requested to follow the official communication channels of NSE India for details about the webinar dates, registration and participation links.
