Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar, spoke with US President Donald Trump over the phone about the escalating tensions in the area and urged an immediate de-escalation. Yesterday, the two presidents also discussed how rising tensions in West Asia affect worldwide supply chains and global energy markets. The Emir further emphasized the necessity of pursuing diplomatic solutions to protect regional and global security and stability, according to the Qatari statement.

The United Arab Emirates and Iran have established their first high-level communication since the start of hostilities in February, which is another significant diplomatic step. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the vice president of the United Arab Emirates, spoke with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, over the phone yesterday, indicating a cautious return to the bargaining table as the US-led naval blockade tightens its hold on the area. The state news agency WAM said that the phone conversation specifically addressed regional developments and strategies for reducing tensions.

The uncommon communication between the two nations came after the UAE called for the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and denounced Iran’s attacks on Gulf states as terrorist acts.
