As indicated by the US administration, a ceasefire has essentially put an end to the fight with Iran, which may enable it to avoid requesting legislative authorization under the War Powers Resolution. While a senior administration official stated that hostilities that started on February 28 had stopped and that no fire had been exchanged since the April 7 truce, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth informed senators that the ceasefire halted the war.

After 60 days of military operations, the 1973 statute mandates withdrawal or legislative permission. The administration claims that during a truce, time is suspended and that it has until Friday to either comply or extend the deadline.

The United States maintains a naval blockade on Iranian oil imports, but Iran still controls the Strait of Hormuz. Legislative authorization and specific goals are necessary for ongoing military action, according to Democrats and some Republicans who have pushed for congressional support.
